Toward the light

Toward the light

In Southern India, a child in a teal sari moves through a colonnade of golden arches toward a door filled with light. She doesn't know she's being photographed. She doesn't know she has just become the soul of this image — the single human note that gives all that gilded geometry its meaning and its scale. Shot in a temple, rendered in Rembrandt warmth, this is the photograph that reminds you why the camera exists: to catch the unrepeatable moment when light, architecture, and human presence align perfectly and briefly, and then are gone.
