Low tide, Wrightsville

Low tide, Wrightsville

Shot at low tide on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, this black and white study finds the landscape at its most elemental — rippled sand stretching toward a razor-thin horizon, a thin channel of retreating water catching the sky, clouds building overhead with quiet drama. The color is gone, and nothing is lost. If anything, the monochrome reveals what color might have concealed — the extraordinary texture of the tidal flat, the depth of the sky, the sense of standing at the edge of something vast and indifferent and beautiful. A photograph for people who find the ocean more moving when it's empty.
