Leaning
A dune fence on Figure Eight Island, North Carolina, leaning into a sand dune that has been slowly, patiently winning the argument for years. Rendered in warm sepia tones that give the image the quality of an old photograph or a half-remembered summer, this is a study in graceful yielding — the man-made object accepting, at last, the terms of the natural world. Footprints trail away across the sand behind it, someone already gone. There is nothing sad here, only the particular beauty of things that have stood long enough to earn their lean.
